We have come a long way in the last 25 years since Tim Berners-Lee first developed the worldwide web. In the past quarter century, an entire generation of young people has grown up not knowing a world where they are not connected all of the time.
Turning 25 years old the Web has changed our lives permanently, everything from the way we learn, shop, and work, to how we socialize all have been influenced by a single “click” of the mouse. However, with the good comes the bad, and as our digital life has become ever more encompassing, so has the rise of hackers, infections and malicious websites. In this article, we will discuss some of the inherent dangers of surfing the net, and how Web Companion can work with you to help eliminate a lot of the challenges, we face daily on the Web.
Malicious Websites are everywhere just follow the money
If you are like me, you probably spend a good portion of your waking hours on a computer, laptop, smartphone browsing through countless webpages. If you were also asked how many pages you browse in a given hour or day, would you know the answer? The odds are that you would guess probably on the low side.
According to studies by Google as well as by AV-Test.org the number of malware-infected websites and infections are growing exponentially year over year. In fact, it is estimated that 9% of sites contain a vulnerability that is serious enough where the unsuspecting visitor would download some type of malware. So for every 11 sites you navigate, the odds are that you will land on at least one that can harm your PC. So just by innocently surfing the Web, your computer is potentially collecting spyware, adware, and malware on a daily basis.
In a recent study of Web Companion users conducted by the Adaware Malware Lab Team of users surfing habits, the team came up with some surprising statistics on how rampant malicious URLs are and how diverse they are spread out across the Internet.
The team estimates that it protects users from 10,000 malicious websites per hour, every hour, 365 days a year. Over a one year period, this amounts to a mind-numbing 87,600,000 occasions where malware infections are prevented with Web Companion.
Protecting your peace-of-mind online
With the inherent vulnerabilities of open source CMS tools like WordPress, it is easy to see just how easy it is to compromise the security of a website. Because it is open source all hackers need to know is where to inject their malicious piece of code – within the core, plugins, or themes.
Malicious hackers know this, and to ensure success, they further compound the issue through the use of social engineering techniques and activities to entice the public to malicious websites regardless of what they are – online shopping, news, adult sites, gaming, online streaming.
The very nature of websites, how they operate, and how we use them, make us extremely vulnerable to security risks and infections. The need for an effective anti-malware tool is greater today than ever before.
Luckily, the team from Web Companion also knows this and have worked diligently to implement the resources, infrastructure, maturity, and dedication in order to stay one step ahead of malicious hackers as well as advanced cyber threats to help mitigate the risk and slow — or perhaps even reverse — the upward cybercrime trends.
In the past quarter-century, the Web has changed the world in ways that no one could have ever perceived. And for the last 20 years, the team at Adaware and Web Companion have been with you every step of the way, helping to ensure your online peace-of-mind.
